Sarit's Profile
Name: Ms Sarit Black
Job in band: Bassist/backing vocals
What gear do you use?
I play a 1967 Fender Precision - she's my baby. There's some debate over whether she is in fact a 1965 bass, but either way she's older than me! I bought it a lot cheaper than I should have but I like to think she found her way to me. If that guitar could talk she'd have some very interesting tales from the road. I also have a Fenton-Wiell, a 50s model – very cool.
I use a Trace Elliot GP7 300 watt combo containing a 10" speaker, with Trace Elliot cabinet with 4x8". Sounds fab!
Strings, like Dave I also use Ernie Ball bass custom slinkys (45, 65, 80, 100). I have used heavier strings but the guitar didn't like them cos with it being a 60s bass the neck is slim and is probably used to having thin strings. I also use Dunlop 1.14mm picks.
Also use a Boss ME58b multi effects pedal and i've recently got another boss heavy metal hm3 pedal.
Musical Influences?
I had three main influences when I first got into music – biggest being Nirvana. When I started listening to Aerosmith however it was them who inspired me to want to do nothing but play rock music and still be playing rock music when I'm in my 50s. With all that they went through over the years (or decades) they're still making music now. Also Manic Street Preachers (the first four albums). The first band I was in was very much inspired by them.
What do you like to do when you're not touring?
Don't really have much time to do things I like when not touring any more, there's always paper work, admin, and planning for our next tour/CD to do.
Best or worst gig memory?
I can't pick out a best gig memory because there are too many – things like the first time I walked out onto the stage at the LA2/Mean Fiddler in London cos I like playing on big stages and there were loads of people there. Also there have been loads of great gigs in smaller venues where we can be more intimate with the audience. I can't really recall any devastatingly bad gigs – every band plays a gig now and then where they feel it could have gone better, but the worst memories tend to be before or after the show – like Glasgow Garage on the 3 Colours Red tour year, seconds before we went onstage I went over on my (already bad) ankle down a couple of steps but played the show which went really well and we really enjoyed it, then an hour after the gig my ankle had swollen up and the pain suddenly hit me. Then again, things like that don't really spoil the gigs or can't really be classed as worst gig memory. Anyway...
Name a few favourite films:
Too many to mention – a recent favourite is definitely Donnie Darko. Old time favourites include pretty much all the Tarantino films, Stand By Me, Empire of the Sun, the Alien films, Hellraiser (and other horrors like the Nightmare on Elm Street films, Candyman), world cinema films like Ring (NOT the Hollywood version), Amores Perros, Run Lola Run.
Favourite books?
Don't read much these days, or I'll start a book and won't get a chance to finish it. I used to love horror books (Stephen King, James Herbert, Dean Koontz) but I also like Jostein Gaarders books (Solitaire Mystery, Sophie's World). Harper Lee's 'To Kill A Mockingbird', William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies'. I like Shakepeare's works – Romeo & Juliet, Taming of the Shrew, Merchant of Venice among many others. I like reading plays and I used to like a bit of poetry.
What's your star sign?
Sagittarius.
What are your best/worst qualities?
Best quality – having all the Sagittarian traits. Worst quality – having all the Sagittarian traits. I'm extremely ambitious and I'm at my best when challenged, and I am very hard working, honest, reliable and a good listener. But I can have a fiery temper, can be very impatient and have a lack of self-control, I can also be a complete bitch but at least I admit it! Make of all that what you will.
If you were an insect what do you think you'd be?
A wasp.
What animal sums you up the best and why?
I'd like to say something fierce like a tiger but I'm not really fierce. If I'm to be honest I guess I'm more like a dog cos I'm loyal, I can be a really good friend, although sometimes I can be a bit of shithead as I don't like being told what to do. Then again I'm also like a crow – a bit of a misunderstood creature but when it comes down to it, I fly free.
If you could take three things into the next world, what would you take?
Music, chocolate and my bass guitar.
What are your ambitions in life?
To see the world, to still be playing rock music with Dave and Pai in decades to come.
